Shillong Peak
The highest point in Shillong offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire city and surrounding hills. On a clear day you can see deep into the plains of Bangladesh. The drive up is as enjoyable as the view itself.
Elephant Falls
Approx ₹20A beautiful three-tiered waterfall set in a forested valley. Named by the British (who saw an elephant-shaped rock that was destroyed in an earthquake), this is one of Shillong's most visited spots. Visit in the morning before large tourist groups arrive.
Ward's Lake (Nan Polok)
Approx ₹10–20A serene artificial lake surrounded by manicured gardens, right in the heart of Shillong city near Police Bazar. Paddle boating is available. A great place for a morning or evening stroll.
Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures
Approx ₹50–100One of the finest museums in all of Northeast India. Spread across seven floors, it documents the culture, history, costumes, languages, and traditions of virtually every tribal community in Northeast India. Allow at least 2 hours here.
Umiam Lake (Barapani)
One of the largest man-made lakes in Northeast India, Umiam Lake is a stunning reservoir surrounded by pine forests. Boating, kayaking, and water cycling are available. Also popular as a picnic spot.
Mawphlang Sacred Forest
A millennia-old sacred grove maintained by the Khasi people. The forest is remarkably dense and untouched — not a single leaf is supposed to be taken out. Guided walks reveal ancient monoliths and extraordinarily diverse flora.
Police Bazar
The busy, colourful commercial heart of Shillong. Great for shopping local handicrafts, Meghalayan shawls, bamboo products, khasi jewellery, and street food. Try Jadoh (Khasi pork rice dish) and Tungrymbai (fermented soybean curry) at local eateries.
